Evolving Perfection
Like you’ve come to expect from the original Ultimax drivers, the Ultimax II units deliver nothing short of exceptional performance. These powerhouse drivers are built to impress with their deep, clean, fast and powerful low frequency output. Equipped with a carbon fiber cone, rigid cast aluminum frame, dual spiders, enormous flat wound voice coil, dual shorting rings, extensive venting and an FEA optimized motor; The Ultimax II are specially engineered for high volumes, ultra-low bass extension, and minimal distortion. This means you can expect an incredible amount of clean and accurate low frequency output from this compact driver.
Healthy Power Handling
Thanks to its superior design incorporating an enormous diameter flat wound voice coil and extensive venting, the Ultimax II drivers can handle staggering amounts of power continuously, without significant power compression or thermal fatigue. With dual two Ohm voice coils you have the freedom to operate in stereo two Ohm mode or configure it in either one Ohm or four Ohm mono mode, giving you maximum flexibility in your setup.
Enclosure Flexibility
Let’s talk about enclosure flexibility, which is a standout feature of the Ultimax II range. These subwoofers are engineered to perform excellently in sealed enclosures that’s comparatively small, providing output that can reach into the bottom octave. But that’s not all. If you want to go bigger and bolder with a vented design, rest assured that the Ultimax II will deliver impressive sound pressure levels al the down to the limits of human hearing.
Designed To Just Work
In summary, whether you’re looking for a compact setup or a substantial vented system; the Ultimax II drivers are designed to deliver. With their unbeatable features, exceptional power handling and unparalleled performance; these subwoofers are a stepping stone on the path to audio excellence. Elevate your audio experience to new heights. Or should we say new lows!?
Design Features
The rich heritage of this astute and masterful designer, together with its ever-increasing technical acumen; is conducive to these components featuring a vast array of impressive design ideologies and latest technological advancements. We canvass some of these technologies further below.
Carbon Fiber Cone And High Roll Rubber Surround
With a remarkably high strength to weight ratio, Dayton Audio chose a single layer woven carbon fiber cone for the Ultimax II as the original design. This rigid diaphragm resists deformation from the stress of high displacement to ensure pistonic movement and extreme durability. Thanks to the low mass, this driver can reproduce every detail with accuracy and control. More than just a cosmetic touch, the cone is indexed for a smooth transition between the cone and surround adding extra rigidity on the edge to minimize unwanted resonances. Supporting the diaphragm is a high roll butyl rubber surround that has been optimized to allow extreme excursion without sacrificing cone area.
Flat Wound Voice Coil
In order to reliably handle power aplenty, the Ultimax II subwoofers are driven by a large diameter, quad-layer, flat wound voice coil on a vented aluminum former. The flat ribbon wire has significantly more surface and contact area than round wire resulting in improved heat transfer and dissipation. The four layers put more windings in the magnetic gap while keeping the gap as tight as possible, improving motor strength and overall control. Additionally, the thick aluminum former plays a crucial role by efficiently drawing heat away from the voice coil, the first step to keeping the motor cool.
Optimised Motor With Extensive Venting
In order to ensure optimal performance and minimize distortion, the voice coil is driven by a FEA optimized magnet assembly. This assembly creates a powerful and symmetric magnetic field in the center of the voice coil allowing for identical forward and backward movement of the cone, even at maximum displacement. The top and back plates have been precisely machined with sculpted edges to effectively contain and transfer the magnetic force. To prevent overheating, the motor assembly and frame feature extensive venting; allowing heat to escape from the voice coil and former. This venting is achieved through various paths including the voice coil former, sub-cone, under the spider, through the pole piece and voice coil gap; thus ensuring efficient cooling and preventing power compression even during long listening sessions.
Low Distortion Shorting Cap And Sleeve
To keep distortion at a minimum, the Ultimax II drivers incorporate an aluminum shorting sleeve and a thick aluminum pole piece cap. These elements play a crucial role in maintaining stability and consistency in the motor’s magnetic field as the voice coil moves within the magnetic gap. In addition, they ensure that the inductance remains linear throughout the entire stroke of the voice coil. This consistent motor force is instrumental in minimizing non-linearities and intermodulation distortion. Moreover, the shorting rings contribute to a reduction in the overall inductance of the voice coil. Thereby enhancing the output capability in the mid-bass and upper bass frequencies.
Dual Spiders With Stitched Tinsel Leads
Achieving truly linear movement in high excursion drivers is of utmost importance. Even the tiniest rocking motion can be greatly magnified as the cone travels further away from its resting position. In order to avoid this issue, the Ultimax II drivers incorporate a dual spider system. The spiders are intentionally spaced as far apart as possible to ensure that the cone and voice coil move reliably in a pistonic manner. Furthermore, in order to prevent fatigue and breakage the tinsel leads have been meticulously stitched onto the top spider. This not only enhances the overall durability but also eliminates any possibility of contact between the leads and the cone or spider.
