Design Ideologies
The evolution of the highly acclaimed Iridium and Nobelium ranges; the Scandinavia series represent the extensive advancements in all things technological and materialistic. These components represent the absolute pinnacle of Swedish audio engineering, and to say they’re impressive is a titanic understatement.
What’s In That Case
Upon opening that smartly decorated box you’re greeted with a plethora of high-end audio goodness. There’re two enormous midrange drivers and two tweeters that are all enclosed in their own spaces. Despite initially looking similar to other DLS drivers you’ll quickly discover they’re unlike anything DLS have made before. You cannot help but take note of the beautiful build quality of these masterpieces, for they’re impressive in every way.
Here Comes The Boom – The Woofers
Starting with those Scandinavia 165 midrange drivers, the first thing you appreciate is the immensely strong but lightweight blended fiberglass diaphragm. This cone and the motor are seated in a die-cast six finger basket and this helps to anchor all the internal parts sturdily. Couple this advanced cone construction with a butyl rubber surround and heavy duty raised progressive spider and you’ll see all the internals are held tightly concentric which aids in providing accurate mid range response. The chrome plated back plate is extended, clamping the extremely strong symmetrical magnet and motor structure firmly onto the bottom of the basket. Neat plated push-type terminals are also mounted into the side of the basket and again emphasize the high levels of craftsmanship DLS have employed in order to make these drivers great. The voice coil is another area where the Scandinavia drivers are a vast improvement over the predecessors. The voice coil is now a flat wire wound on a massive diameter coated former. The entire voice coil and former also benefits from side slot windows which allow air to flow in and through the voice coil gap. This aids in cooling the driver considerably while under heavy load and serve to maximise heat dissipation, giving the driver the ability to handle literally hundreds of watts continuous power. Because of the way the driver is designed it can output an extremely wide frequency response, providing high resolution sound across the entire midrange spectrum resulting in superb staging and imaging.
Bringing The Detail- The Tweeters
Focusing on the tweeter and again the DLS engineers have not cut any corners in developing a unit far superior to anything previous. The Scandinavia 30 is first rate in every day, featuring a combination of a light weight textile dome and a powerful motor system which also sits in a die cast basket like the midrange motor. The beauty of the textile dome is that not only does it maintain its shape very well under most loads, it also has a beautifully smooth response that lacks any trace of harshness that many tweeters suffer from. The voice coil of the tweeter is also wound on the former with thick wire which gives the tweeters quite high power handling abilities to match the midrange drivers.
More Importantly How Do They Sound
So what do the Scandinavia speakers sound like? Glad you asked. The first thing most people notice is how smooth, even and realistic the larger two speakers sound. The midrange drivers produce a surprisingly clean sound right throughout the frequency range, even up to a couple of thousand Hertz before they’re crossed and duties are handed to the tweeter. Most people don’t expect quite such a punchy attack from such a massive motored midranges, nor do most expect them to remain so smooth and controlled doing so. The midrange drivers remain extremely accurate deep into the lower end of the frequency scale, whereas the higher frequency reproduction is usually exactly what most people expect; beautifully clean and clear. Thanks to the advanced design of the domes the Scandinavia tweeters are actually a lot softer than you’d first suspect given how hard the rest can kick. You simply set the attenuation levels to suit your personal tastes and away you go.
The Scandinavia components are a wonderful solution for someone who demands extremely accurate sound and plenty of realism. Many audiophiles, whether they be classical musicians, ravers or metal heads would gladly give these speakers a home. For they can provide everything from spectacular control through to truck loads of bass without ado.
