German Maestro - Engineering Every Element To Perfection
Insofar as top shelf audio is concerned; the name German Maestro is synonymous with high quality equipment, and although nowadays it has very few rivals the company didn’t just hit these lofty heights straight out of the gate. One of the few remaining designers still operating its own production plant located upon the outskirts of Obrigheim Germany; this masterful craftsman continues a long tradition in loudspeaker design and manufacturing that started literally decades earlier under the moniker MB Quart. Since that time it’s not only designed but also produced what are arguably amongst the best car, home, marine and headset speakers available. Suffice to say it takes quality assurance very seriously and this is evident throughout everything the company undertakes. If ever there was a shinning example or a designer putting quality about profit, it's German Maestro.
M-Line Series - Experience Zero Compromise Sound
Shadowing an already impressive stable, the M-Line series represent the ultimate components you can get from astute designer German Maestro. Every element of knowledge about speaker engineering, every ounce of experience, every skill in manufacturing high-end loudspeakers; they're all combined in this product. The result is accuracy and realism unlike that which you've ever heard before. Whether you're in the concert hall, at the festival stage, at the unplugged-gig, at a rave or anywhere else; absolutely everything is presented with breathtaking quality and stunning detail.
Design Ideologies
Representing the evolution of the existing flagship M-Line series, the name might not have changed but the technology is far removed; the result of extensive technological and material advancements. These components represent the absolute pinnacle of Germany audio engineering, in all its glory.
What’s In A Box
The drivers come neatly packaged, draped with a large German Maestro flag. Not a necessary item but still a neat touch nonetheless. The rich heritage of this astute company, together with it’s ever increasing technical acumen; is conducive to these components featuring a vast array of impressive design ideologies and latest technological advancements. Therefore let’s take a closer look.
The Minute Powerhouse – The Domes
Starting the narrative with the tweeter; the remodeled MT 40 WS now features a 26.5 mm titanium based inverted dome profile that’s the result of countless hours of FEM software simulation and fluid modeling, undertaken in order to calculate the precise geometry required to allow both motor and diaphragm to work in concert projecting sound well forward before dispersing it throughout an extraordinarily wide azimuth; all whilst maintaining its shape under the most trying of circumstances. Aiding this is a specifically developed Nano-ceramic coating designed not only to afford the tweeter a considerable strength coefficient but also minimal mass. These aspects are critical given the laws of physics state that the higher a frequency is the smaller the membrane surface should be in order to disperse sound radiation competently and without distortion. Trouble is though the thinner you make the membrane the worse the compression strength and damping gets, meaning they have a nasty habit of flexing under duress. All these technologies summate to form what German Maestro calls UltraSphere™ technology. Put simply the combination of inverted dome, textured coating and unique motor structure design allow the driver to move air homogenously with far higher efficiency that a conventional dome and with far superior control. The foam outer roll spanning from the frame to the dome forms the top suspension and together with the motor beneath controls all movements with tremendous accuracy. The motor features a six ohm voice coil wrapped upon a thermally efficient 20 mm aluminium former. This is paired with a dense neodymium magnet specially shaped to impress a substantial influence over the aforesaid motor, with both residing in a meticulously designed rear labyrinth chamber. This chamber also contains an aperiodic damping material which combats troublesome back waves emanating from the diaphragm underside, in turn diminishing this turbulence to such a point it can no longer interfere with the motor thus hampering it from reciprocating with lightning fast undistorted transients. The outer case is shock resistant alloy and sports clearly labeled terminals on the back end. The culmination of strong suspension, vigilant chamber design and beefy motor structure not only allow the MT 40 WS a power handling of 90 Watts continuously; it also returns a resonant frequency of 1188 Hz which is conducive to a lower F3 point meaning it can blend with the midrange seamlessly.
Pin Point Kinetics – The Cones
Moving along to the MW 6508 woofer; this 166 mm driver is one robust unit and shares various technologies with its smaller sibling. However don’t let its diminutive motor structure dissuade you. For though it might look similar to previous models, within lurks a motor structure that reeks of technological advancements. However when talking control remember electricity is only part the equation. Magnetic force is also critical too if one is to keep that electrified coil working in harmony with the rest of the system and to that end the basket plays a key role. The frame is constructed from alloy, a largely inert material thus employed so as not to interfere with the magnetic forces encapsulated within. The motor starts with a generous high-density neodymium magnet which exerts a strong and exacting influence over the voice coil in order to control it during its entire +/- 3.84 mm Xmax, thus allowing it to retail optimum control right down to the subsonic regions. The motor comprises of an enormous 38.1 mm vented Kapton former tightly wrapped with an edge wound four ohm copper voice coil. Both the magnet and voice coil have also undergone extensive FEM simulations and feature specific t-yoke geometry in order to maximise efficiency during linear travel. However in order to retain a relatively shallow mounting depth in accordance with playing very low frequencies the traditional pole vent had to be omitted, which posed a problem with cooling. So how would German Maestro get around this conundrum? The answer lies within the laws of thermal dynamics. There’re only two effective ways of dissipating heat; either you douse the source with cool air or else you draw the heat away from the source instead allowing radiation to take effect. This driver utilises both methods, first drawing cool air down through the spider. Then rather than expulsion via a pole vent German Maestro instead opted to incorporate a mechanical heat transfer system in the form of healthy sized radiator fins. Liberally peppered all over the basket; these dissipation fins surround the motor and draw heat away before expelling it into the surrounding air. This affords it the ability to handle around 90 Watts continuously, with the suspension allowing for over triple that if need be. The sturdy polycotton spider works in conjunction with the surround above holding everything in place and returns a resonance frequency of 49 Hz and sensitivity of 86.9 dB. Top side is also home to a mechanical work of art, the cone being constructed from a base of pulp to achieve a natural and affluent sound. This has then undergone a similar Nano-ceramic treatment to that of the tweeter, which not only improves damping characteristics and minimises distortions but also give the cone gargantuan strength. Lining the edge of this diaphragm is a thick butyl surround that also has a specially designed parabolic profile allowing it to maintain accuracy whether playing softly or hammering one into oblivion. Yet despite the seriousness of the suspension system it’s still fluid enough to allow for a frequency response well into five figure cycle territory.
Breaking The Sound Stream – The Crossovers
Even the best drivers in the world still need their frequencies limited, and these new crossovers are the recipient of some extensive reworking. As is often the case with German Maestro it’s opted to pay more attention to the component quality and topology rather than striving to make them the biggest and most complex. That said these are a radical departure from those previous, and running an eager eyeball over them reveals painstaking attention to construction detail from the gold plated recessed connector blocks through to the high quality film & electrolytic capacitors, air & core inductors and low tolerance ceramic resistors. Beautifully simplistic in their design, they provide a second order 12 dB slope for the tweeter set upon 2000 Hz with a Butterworth logarithm Q of 0.7. Upon first inspection there appears to be a small gap however because of the Butterworth slope has an intrinsic 3 dB summation gain the gap is masked perfectly without serious phase and overlap issues presenting themselves. Level control hasn’t been forgotten either; you can attenuate the tweeter either -2 dB or -4 dB to suit your application. The components all reside in a black plastic 190 mm x 105 mm x 40 mm case complete with open sides for cooling and smoked clear top cover for protection.
Installation And Listening
We’ve not only installed plenty of M-Line components here at Fhrx Studios, we’ve also extensively tested them. Therefore let’s discuss how they performed. The inherently shallow mounting depth will allow these speakers to fit into many a vehicle. Being a flagship speaker we did hold serious expectations, all of which were not only met but well and truly exceeded. Listening for mere minutes immediately reveals these components to be quite simply superb. It’s actually a tad confronting at first, not insomuch as you’re not expecting it but more that it’s hard to prep yourself for just how impressive their sound signature and colouration qualities are. The technical advancements speak for themselves, for these new components are simply stunning and we’re not talking solely in comparison to the German Maestro stable either. Judging from what we’ve heard hitherto these speakers will easily outdo many of their esteemed colleagues, including some of which are over quintuple their price. The lifelike atmosphere they create is just astounding; they’re more controlled, more refined, more accurate, it’s just more, more and more of everything positive. Working together via those new crossovers also ensures both drivers transition together seamlessly in order to produce an overall linear sound which is pronounced well forward of their mounting locations.
The first line on German Maestro’s about us page is a quote from Sir Frederick Henry Royce of Rolls-Royce fame. It states “Small things are what make perfection, but perfection is anything but a small thing.” This quote is anthropomorphized in these components. Compared to previous models there’s no neon sign pointing to any one significant aspect of this new design. However one listen will reveal that all those little improvements combine to present a component set bordering on just that; perfection.
