Design Ideologies
Just glancing at the C7 series components one can tell there’s a phenomenon amount of research and development implemented into their design. However it goes much further than that. Between conceptualising, designing, testing and wise material selection these components are beautiful to behold. Let us now explore some of these concepts further.
Analysis And Solutions
C7 design solutions were created and refined using JL Audio’s powerful mechanical and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) modelling systems, including its proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA) software. These studies led to innovative motor and suspension solutions, which were key to meeting the C7 design goals for smooth, off-axis response, dynamic stability and low distortion.
No Stone Left Unturned
No detail, material or design element went unexamined in each of the C7 speakers/ From the exotic, corundum ceramic-coated diaphragm of the C7 tweeter to the intricately machined motor plates of the C7 midrange; these all significantly improve linearity. Even seemingly small details were engineered with a great deal of thought, like the way the C7-350cm’s specially engineered lead wires attach to the rear suspension to prevent noise and without damaging the spider material’s integrity. Or The C7-650cw woofer’s dust cap went through ten prototype generations before arriving at the solution that resulted in the smoothest high frequency response and the best mechanical integrity. These details and hundreds of others like them simply had to be perfect, if the design team was to approve them for the C7 drivers.
Zero Technical Compromise
As one would expect the C7 designers sought to avoid technical compromises, this was conducive to the system being designed as active. Because all cars intrinsically require processor, these components are assumed to feature within a processed system which handles the crossing of frequencies. The other advantage of running one channel per speaker is that more head room conducive to better sound quality through higher damping factor, better slew rate and lower distortion.
Aural Results
When installed correctly the result is a spectacular musical presentation, easily exceeding the performance boundaries of typical high-end car audio speaker systems. One listen to the C7 components will reveal a level of resolution, precision and imaging that suspends disbelief; opening a window to an intensely pure audio experience that’ll leave you speechless.
Design Features
JL Audio’s engineering department is at the forefront of research into fundamental loudspeaker behaviour. It’s developed proprietary analysis systems and invested heavily in state-of-the-art manufacturing and testing. This has borne numerous products widely considered as reference standards and has also resulted in many U.S. and International Patents issued for technologies that refine and extend the audio performance envelope. Many of these impressive design techniques can be found within the C7 series drives. So without further ado let’s check out the smallest C7 driver; the 1” corundum ceramic-coated, aluminium dome component Tweeter.
High Frequency Thinking – The Concept
The C7-100ct component tweeter is designed to deliver unparalleled high-frequency performance. Utilizing a corundum ceramic-coated aluminium alloy diaphragm suspended via a treated silk s-roll surround, it provides spectacularly detailed reproduction of treble frequencies with outstanding off-axis response. Distortion and non-linearities have been minimized through critical optimization of dynamic motor and suspension behaviours.
Dispersing Air Accurately – The Dome
The corundum ceramic coated aluminium alloy diaphragm exhibits high stiffness, very low mass and excellent environmental stability. It also helps the tweeter dome to hold its shape and operate as a true piston at higher frequencies, without a penalty in moving mass.
Reigning Over The Deceleration – The Suspension
The diaphragm’s motion is centered, sprung and damped by a treated silk s-roll surround. Ferrofluid in the magnetic gap acts as a rear suspension element in this design. The two combine to provide optimum damping without unduly restricting excursion.
Controlling The Movement – The Motor
The C7-100ct employs a high-density magnetic circuit with a neodymium magnet and U-Yoke motor topology. An under-hung voice coil is employed, wound with copper-clad aluminium wire onto an aluminium voice coil former. Motor magnetics have been precisely optimized utilizing advanced FEA tools to lower even order distortion and IMD / AMD.
High Frequency Homestead – The Housing
The shape of the tweeter’s acoustic housing is designed to boost sensitivity in a very specific bandwidth, helping to flatten the overall frequency response. It also provides improved control of directivity. So just on the design bandwidth, with 48 dB/octave filters its 3000 Hz to 30000 Hz, with 24 dB/octave filters its 4000 Hz to 30000 Hz and with 12 dB/octave filters its 5000 Hz to 30000 Hz.
Mounting, Testing And Protecting
The C7-100ct are sold as a pair in Australia with flush and surface mounting fixtures and hardware. One 15μF tweeter protection capacitor is also included. The performance of every C7 driver is tested and verified, then assigned a unique serial number. Register your C7 loudspeaker online to receive a copy of its specific Acoustical Test Report.
