Design Ideologies
One of the keys to the HD series of power amplifiers remaining well ahead of the curve is its regulated intelligent power supply (R.I.P.S.) technology. Small is not the only story here. Making a small amplifier is highly desirable of course, though not if power and sound quality are sacrificed. JL Audio’s engineering team focused on achieving world-class fidelity first, and then on making the HD amplifiers amazingly powerful, efficient and small. These efforts led to a remarkable switching amplifier technology called single cycle control (SCC™), thus allowing these goals to be achieved.
This exclusive core amplifier technology is mated to JL Audio’s regulated, intelligent power supply (R.I.P.S.), advanced thermal management systems and a full complement of studio-grade processing features. Behind every HD’s removable security cover you’ll find studio-grade signal processing with fully variable crossover filters. Also included are highly flexible differential-balanced inputs with remote level control capabilities via the HD-RLC remote level control (optional).
Design Features
JL Audio throws the gauntlet down challenging people to sonically compare the HD amplifiers to any amplifier at any price. Big call, but JL Audio are confident you’ll quickly discover that the HD series are a cut above the competition. Some of the features that make this possible are as follows.
Regulated, Intelligent Power Supply
The remarkable R.I.P.S. System ensures consistent power delivery over a wide range of battery voltages and load impedances.
Single Cycle Control™
Single Cycle Control is a unique approach to controlling a full-range class D amplifier. By tracking the audio signal comparing it to the real PWM waveform, then correcting it in each and every cycle (over 400,000 times per second); a multitude of distortion-causing mechanisms can be tightly controlled to enable pristine amplification.
Differential Balanced Inputs
JL Audio’s differential balanced Inputs are engineered to combat induced cable noise, which is a common problem in car and marine audio installations. This technology allows for the use of conventional RCA cables, while delivering many of the benefits of a true balanced connection and accepting a wide range of input signal levels.
RealSink™
Many audio amplifiers rely on big lumps of metal that do a good job of storing heat, but not such a great job of getting rid of it. RealSink™ uses real cast alloy heat sinks with vertically oriented fins. This design is far more effective than the aforementioned approach, utilizing the physics of convection and radiation to more effectively exchange heat with the surrounding air. This heat sink design was refined through extensive finite-element analysis, resulting in amplifiers that keep their cool under the most demanding conditions.
Advanced Rollback Protection
JL Audio’s exclusive advanced rollback protection circuit monitors the amplifier’s thermal condition and adjusts amplifier operation to eliminate annoying amplifier shut-down events.
HD Mounting Options
The compact dimensions of the HD amplifiers open up a whole range of installation options simply not possible with larger designs. To give you as many mounting options as possible, the design incorporates flexible mounting options for single or multiple amplifier installations.
