Design Ideologies
That intro byline regarding the TW3 series subwoofers being capable of greater linear excursion than many full-size subwoofers wasn’t a misprint. To achieve this remarkable feat JL Audio’s thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the TW3’s using a concentric tube structure built into the injection-moulded cone body. This structure supports the voice coil and the spider while positioning the large motor structure further forward than with conventional speaker designs. Deep, powerful and accurate subbass is now possible in more applications than ever.
The TW3 platform is optimized for extremely small enclosures and feature a tab-ear mounting design to maximize cone area within their mounting footprints. For there’s nothing quite as detrimental as half the cone surface area being consumed by a large roll surround.
Built Like No Other
Every W3v3 subwoofer is built to exacting quality standards in JL Audio’s factory in Miramar, Florida. All models are completely original designs from surround to back-plate, even the bolts and screws used in assembly have been purpose-designed and manufactured to its specifications. Sure it might be a bit obsessive, but so is the quest for the ultimate in audio reproduction. A goal that JL Audio pursue with passion, through research and without compromise.
Design Features
JL Audio’s engineering department is at the forefront of research into fundamental loudspeaker behaviour. It has developed proprietary analysis systems and invested heavily in state-of-the-art manufacturing and testing. This has borne numerous products widely considered as reference standards and has also resulted in many U.S. and International Patents issued for technologies that refine and extend the audio performance envelope. Many of these have found their way into the TW3 design. Let’s look a little closer at some of the key features.
Dynamic Motor Analysis
JL Audio’s proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system is a powerful suite of FEA-based modelling systems, first developed by JL Audio in 1997 and refined over the years to scientifically address the issue of speaker motor linearity. This leads to vastly reduced distortion and faithfully reproduced transients… or put simply: tight, clean, articulate bass.
Concentric Tube Suspension
The biggest challenge in any low-profile subwoofer design is to create enough mechanical clearance for the speaker to generate enough excursion to meet its output and low-frequency extension goals. Since these goals were very ambitious in the development of JL Audio’s low-profile subwoofers, achieving them required development of a new suspension architecture.
JL Audio’s solution employs a moulded structure which spans over the edge of the motor system, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor’s boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large diameter voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers.
Engineered Lead-Wire System
Carefully engineered lead-wire design and attachments ensure controlled, quiet lead-wire behaviour under the most extreme excursion demands.
Tab-Ear Frame Design
By employing a tab-ear mounting system, the driver’s overall outside dimensions are reduced. This permits it to be mounted in a space that is very similar to that required by the next smaller round subwoofer frame.
