Design Ideologies
The amazing TW5v2 series serve up real-world full-size subwoofer performance, with only a few inches of mounting depth. This unique ranges of subwoofers are yet another example of JL Audio’s commitment to engineering innovation. Our thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the TW5v2 using a concentric tube structure that supports the oversized voice coil and the suspension attachments. This permits placing a large motor structure much further forward in the speaker than with conventional designs, while maintaining excellent linear excursion capability and mechanical stability.
Committed To Defeating Tight Space Challenges
In keeping with its tight-spaces mission, the TW5v2 series are optimized for enclosures that are far smaller than what most similar sized subwoofers require. JL Audio engineers even designed the mounting system to allow it to fit in the same footprint as a standard twelve-inch subwoofer. Deep, powerful and accurate bass is now possible in the most challenging installation applications.
Built Like No Other
So why the new version? Well naturally JL Audio couldn’t leave the ultimate thin woofer alone. It set out to make it even better. JL Audio’s patented thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the TW5v2 series using a concentric tube structure to support the titanic seven-inch diameter voice coil and the suspension attachments. This permits placement of the large motor structure much further forward in the speaker than with conventional designs, while allowing excellent linear excursion capability and mechanical stability.
Ultimate Excursion
To unleash even more performance from this technology, the latest version improves upon the original with 13% greater linear excursion capability. The cast alloy chassis has also been modified for greater strength and the redesigned motor now features an annular vent. These drivers are available in single 2 Ohm and single 4 Ohm voice coil versions to fit a wide range of applications.
Design Features
JL Audio’s engineering department is at the forefront of research into fundamental loudspeaker behaviour. It has developed proprietary analysis systems and invested heavily in state-of-the-art manufacturing and testing. This has borne numerous products widely considered as reference standards and has also resulted in many U.S. and International Patents issued for technologies that refine and extend the audio performance envelope. Many of these have found their way into the TW5v2 design. Let’s look a little closer at some of the key features.
Dynamic Motor Analysis
JL Audio’s proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system is a powerful suite of FEA-based modelling systems, first developed by JL Audio in 1997 and refined over the years to scientifically address the issue of speaker motor linearity. This leads to vastly reduced distortion and faithfully reproduced transients… or put simply: tight, clean, articulate bass.
Concentric Tube Suspension
The biggest challenge in any low-profile subwoofer design is to create enough mechanical clearance for the speaker to generate enough excursion to meet its output and low-frequency extension goals. Since these goals were very ambitious in the development of JL Audio’s low-profile subwoofers, achieving them required development of a new suspension architecture.
JL Audio’s solution employs a moulded structure which spans over the edge of the motor system, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor’s boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large diameter voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers.
Floating Cone Attach Method
This assembly technique, conceived by JL Audio; ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
Engineered Lead-Wire System
Carefully engineered lead-wire design and attachments ensure controlled, quiet lead-wire behaviour under the most extreme excursion demands.
Tab-Ear Frame Design
By employing a tab-ear mounting system, the driver’s overall outside dimensions are reduced. This permits it to be mounted in a space that is very similar to that required by the next smaller round subwoofer frame.
