Design Ideologies
Norwegian born company Seas has been designing, perfecting and manufacturing high-end sound quality speakers and subwoofers for over half a century now. Not only for the car audio and home audio OEM industry, but also for regular punters right through to full blown audiophiles and those involved within the rigorous aftermarket competition scene.
Amassed Excellence
During it’s tenure at the top this tenacious designer has amassed more knowledge and experience than most other speaker companies combined. It’s Lotus and Extreme stable of speakers and subwoofers are designed specifically for the car audio environment and though the original versions were launched years ago; these designs are continuously being perfected as technologies, methodologies and materials continue to evolve.
Performance Intrinsic To Experience
Taking advantage of it’s vast skills, experience and technical acumen gained from it’s loyal audiophile fans worldwide; Seas continues to push the boundaries of high-end speaker design. For the most sophisticated demands, Seas utilises some of the most advanced building techniques in the world. When you couple this with some of the worlds best materials available, the end result is always nothing short of breathtaking.
Subwoofers To Suit For Modern Demands
The L26ROY is a high-fidelity woofer intended for multi-way systems, closed box and transmission line designs. With an extremely stiff aluminium cone, it provides a tremendous bass precision with little to no cone deformation even at the edges.
Keeping Everything Concentric
A 2.2″ / 56 mm diameter high power glass fibre former with a two-layer high temperature voice coil for excellent force transfer and transient sound reproduction. A long throw EROM rubber surround together with a textile spider allow for the outstanding linear excursion of the coil while keeping it well centered at high power. The lead wires are symmetrically stitched to the spider to avoid resonances. The overall suspension is designed to assure stability during extreme excursions. These characteristics result in a very low mechanical damping for better clarity bringing up the micro details in music.
Optimised Motor
The design features a Cu-cap around the pole pieces which serve to reduce non-linear and modulation distortion and increase overload margin. The extra large dual 175 mm x 22 mm ferrite magnet system provides high efficiency and low Q for improved bottom end roll-off even in small enclosures.
Holding Things Together
These subwoofers feature and extremely stiff and stable injection moulded metal basket, which keeps the critical components in perfect alignment. Large windows in the basket both above and below the spider reduce sound reflection, whilst allowing cooling air to do it’s job without flow noise and cavity resonance.
Part Numbers Aplenty
If you’re having a doozy of a time getting your head around the Seas Extreme part numbers, they are as follows:
– XM011–04 / L22ROY2-04 is the 8″ subwoofer with Ti former and 4 Ohm voice coil.
– XM011–08 / L22ROY2-08 is the 8″ subwoofer with Ti former and 8 Ohm voice coil.
– XM001–04 / L26ROY is the 10″ silver aluminium cone with Gf former and two layer coil.
– XM004–04 / L26RO4Y is the 10″ silver aluminium cone with Ti former and four layer coil.
– XM007–04 / L26ROY3 is the 10″ black aluminium cone with Gf former and two layer coil.
– XM006–04 / L26RO4Y2 is the 10″ black aluminium cone with Ti former and four layer coil.
So Which Configuration For Me
People often ask whether they should use the dual or quad layer version. Digging around the internet reveals endless discussions containing the standard useless, starkly-contrasting opinions. Without getting bogged down in endless techno-babble; the four layer version boasts a higher BL (force factor), to the detriment of higher inductance. The quad layer also has a heavier moving mass, conducive to a lower Fc (resonant frequency of a sealed system). However Seas has stiffened up the suspension to support the higher Mms on the quad layer. Mms is the moving mass of entire piston assembly, or Mmd plus the air load. The dual layer has less inductance modulation hence lower distortion. Or to put it in plain English based on in-car experience if you can’t be bothered deciphering all that; just run a sealed enclosure with the dual layer version.
