Design Ideologies
JL Audio’s astute TW1 range are designed to excel in previously impossible spaces. They’re built in its Miramar factory in Florida and offer a powerful combination of shallow mounting depth, minimal frontal clearance and insanely small enclosure requirements. This makes them an outstanding choice for the tightest space applications.
Enclosure Optimised
Optimised for enclosures much smaller than any other JL Audio subwoofers, the TW1 series never sound like a big woofer struggling in a tiny box. Instead they deliver all the rich, deep and controlled bass you have come to expect from a JL Audio subwoofer system. JL Audio’s state-of-the-art concentric tube suspension technology compresses mounting depth, using a concentric tube structure built into the injection-molded cone body, to deliver outstanding excursion capability and maximum performance potential.
Clever Frames
The TW1 range also employ a clever frame design that recesses the suspension attachment surface so that most of the forward excursion occurs within the frame’s dimensions. The result is a minimal frontal clearance even with the supplied grille installed.
Design Features
JL Audio’s engineering department is at the forefront of research into fundamental loudspeaker behaviour. It has developed proprietary analysis systems and invested heavily in state-of-the-art manufacturing and testing. This has borne numerous products widely considered as reference standards and has also resulted in many U.S. and International Patents issued for technologies that refine and extend the audio performance envelope. Many of these have found their way into the TW1 design. Let’s look a little closer at some of the key features.
Dynamic Motor Analysis
JL Audio’s proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system is a powerful suite of FEA-based modelling systems, first developed by JL Audio in 1997 and refined over the years to scientifically address the issue of speaker motor linearity. This leads to vastly reduced distortion and faithfully reproduced transients… or put simply: tight, clean, articulate bass.
Concentric Tube Suspension
The biggest challenge in any low-profile subwoofer design is to create enough mechanical clearance for the speaker to generate enough excursion to meet its output and low-frequency extension goals. Since these goals were very ambitious in the development of JL Audio’s low-profile subwoofers, achieving them required development of a new suspension architecture.
JL Audio’s solution employs a moulded structure which spans over the edge of the motor system, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor’s boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large diameter voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers.
Engineered Lead-Wire System
Carefully engineered lead-wire design and attachments ensure controlled, quiet lead-wire behaviour under the most extreme excursion demands.
Tab-Ear Frame Design
By employing a tab-ear mounting system, the driver’s overall outside dimensions are reduced. This permits it to be mounted in a space that is very similar to that required by the next smaller round subwoofer frame.
