But Why The Huge Dust Cap
Why do they have such a large dust cap you ask? Well put simply; the more a woofer cone moves the more it flexes, hence the more it succumbs to mechanical resonance. We call this resonance, or damping; the cone’s Youngs Modulus value. The stronger and stiffer the cone, the better they sound. However you cannot just go making them out of any old rock-hard thing, because then the cone can become heavy and thus the amplifier has a difficult time moving it accurately. So what expert designers like Morel do is utilise lightweight dust caps which are slightly larger and very carefully shaped. These are designed to then join the cone in a very specific position in order to strengthen the entire affair considerably.
