Design Ideologies
The superb IB2 range from One Audio forms the entry point to the company’s infinite-baffle / open-baffle subwoofer range. However closer inspection reveals a driver engineered around considerably more than basic low-frequency reproduction.
Magnificent Motor
The motor incorporates a two-layer, 2″ / 50.8 mm copper voice coil together with a full-length copper pole sleeve, with both elements employed to reduce and linearise inductance. This inductance management helps maintain a more consistent electrical load through the driver’s operating range, extending usable bandwidth while reducing distortion and improving transient accuracy. With a mechanically rated 250 Watts at 20 Hz and 22 mm of Xmax; the IB2 also possesses substantial linear excursion capability for reproducing the lowest octaves with authority.
Masterful Mechanical Architecture
The mechanical architecture is similarly focused on linearity. A rigid fiber-impregnated, non-pressed curvilinear paper-pulp cone provides the required stiffness-to-mass characteristics. While the specially formulated foam surround and Kevlar spider are engineered to maintain controlled, symmetrical suspension behaviour throughout the driver’s excursion range.
Marvelous Magnetics
The triple-stacked magnet assembly increases mechanical clearance around the motor and suspension components, while the IB2’s relatively high Qts is particularly appropriate to infinite-baffle and open-baffle alignments. Rather than relying on a conventional enclosure to provide acoustic loading, the driver’s electrical and mechanical parameters are configured to work effectively in applications where the front and rear radiation are separated by the vehicle’s structure or installation baffle.
Vertical Alignment
One Audio also manufactures the IB2 with a vertically integrated approach, machining the steel components and assembling the completed subwoofers in-house. This allows the company to maintain tighter control over the critical mechanical interfaces and assembly tolerances that ultimately influence driver consistency. Taken as a complete system the IB2 combines high excursion, copper-based inductance mitigation, a substantial motor assembly and a carefully controlled suspension with the high-Qts characteristics required for IB/OB loading. The result is an entry-level driver whose engineering emphasis is firmly on low-frequency linearity, bandwidth, transient behaviour and resolution rather than simply maximum output.
