Design Ideologies
One Audio’s latest variant of its superb IB3 subwoofer incorporates design principles and technologies derived from the award-winning IBn3 neodymium platform. However in this latest design are numerous engineering revisions focused on improving linearity, transient accuracy and low-frequency extension while retaining substantial power handling capability.
Motor Control
Particular attention has been given to controlling motor inductance and maintaining a stable electrical response throughout the driver’s operating range. Three thick aluminium shorting rings together with an upper pole cap provide effective inductance mitigation and motor linearisation, helping reduce impedance modulation and maintain a more consistent response at higher excursion levels. The new 3″ / 76.2 mm four-layer aluminium voice coil delivers a staggering 36 mm of Xmax, while the larger 10″ / 254 mm spider increases suspension control and mechanical linearity. This supports the drivers incredible 4″ / 101.6 mm of peak-to-peak mechanical excursion.
Bulletproof Methodologies
Electrical and mechanical losses have also been addressed throughout the design. Kevlar stitching, double-opposed tinsel leads, oversized push terminals and One Audio’s proprietary terminal-block arrangement are engineered to minimise transmission losses between the input terminals and voice coil. The revised rear-open motor topology improves airflow around the motor assembly, reducing turbulence-related noise while promoting heat transfer from the motor and voice coil into the substantial aluminium outer heat sink. A flow-optimised rear exit further assists thermal management under sustained high-power operation.
Optimsed Design
The robust six spoke aluminium frame provides the required structural rigidity while accommodating the in-house-machined custom FEA-optimised motor structure, allowing the magnetic circuit and suspension geometry to work together with greater mechanical consistency.
Cones Versus Cones
For installations where maximum sound-quality performance and reduced moving mass are priorities, the IB3 can also be specified with a lightweight Rohacell-cored carbon fibre cone. This construction reduces moving mass while increasing cone stiffness, helping suppress unwanted flexing and maintain more controlled piston behaviour as excursion increases.
Applications
The IB3 is engineered around the fundamental requirements of a high-output infinite-baffle driver. These include low inductance, high linear excursion, rigid construction, effective thermal management and controlled mechanical behaviour. The result is a subwoofer capable of reproducing everything from the low-level harmonic structure and transient detail of acoustic instruments to the extreme bottom-octave energy demanded by modern music and cinema soundtracks.
