Design Ideologies
The Sound Line Pro series of components are the evolution of the highly acclaimed bass model Profi series, boasting far superior technologies and materials. Utilising elements like polymer composite diaphragms, large heavy duty exceptionally vented voice coils, die-cast aluminum and polypropylene baskets, extremely strong magnets, fully machined components and high quality plated connection terminals; the Sound Line Pro components are unlike anything previously heard within this price point.
Quality Controlled
Given Rainbow has been developing and testing loudspeakers of all sizes for over thirty years now, you’d have expected the company to all but perfected the art of loudspeaker design, and you’d be correct. Between its manufacturing processes and developmental acumen; all Sound Line Pro drivers are developed and manufactured in accordance with Rainbows strict quality control regime. This guarantees high quality in terms of performance and workmanship. So let’s take a closer look at these design elements.
Shuffling The Zephyr – The Cones
First up let’s look at the larger drivers. As with most things Rainbow they’re meticulously designed and employ some of the finest quality materials available at this price point. The cones are constructed from a polymer material which provides for a natural sound, whilst their light weight allows the amplifier to move them with the upmost competence. The design profile, including hundreds of strengthening dimples; is shaped in such a way to disperse frequencies evenly throughout a wide azimuth. The surface of the cones are finished with a gloss black coating which seals the diaphragm and gives them exception strength against deformation. Around the top of these are butyl based foam surrounds that sport a similar profile to higher level designs. These surrounds work in conjunction with progressive red polycotton spiders below keeping everything running in perfect alignment. It allows for unhindered movement giving the drivers low resonant frequencies and the ability to play very low for their size. Efficiency is listed as 89dB.
Powder coated black aluminium frames were selected over steel numbers for magnetic inertness, and the frames are shaped in such a way as to allow them to fit into most modern cars. Just expanding upon that point for a moment because it’s important; with most modern day cars emerging from the factory with larger drivers mounting depth is seldom an issue. However the actual diameter of the frame often becomes an issue because aftermarket speaker motors require a lot larger basket to hold the internals rigid. Rainbow has got around this issue by employing very strong but narrow motors on these midranges, meaning the back ends are altogether smaller than standard sized midrange drivers. The magnet diameter within these motors is likewise very small not because it’s weak but because it’s constructed from the exquisite element neodymium. This material has a magnetic flux density and strength far beyond that of normal strontium despite being a fraction of the physical size.
Cooling is another area Rainbow revisited and concentrated on. Surrounding the motor structure are multiple enormous perimeter vents, these can intake titanic amounts of cool air whilst the speakers are reciprocating. The zephyr then snakes it’s way around the bottom cap and up through the pole before being expelled through venting holes on the voice coil formers, formers that are wrapped in copper voice couls. Together these allow the drivers to handle large bursts of power for extended periods of time if required.
A Small Work Of Art – The Domes
The tweeters are similar in design to the old high-end Vanadium units and feature all the latest technologically advanced refinements aimed at eliminating any issues the previous one might have possessed. The soft textile dome has been coated with a treatment reserved for strengthening and is blended together with the carefully profiled surround design. The unit has a low resonant frequency and can move with ultra-smooth transients right down into the midrange realm. Insofar as dispersion characteristics go this is one area these tweeters are vastly improved in. By employing a slightly different dome geometry, Rainbow has produced a shape capable of offering superior sound saturation and wide dispersion. Turning the diminutive drivers over reveals a small back chamber made from polymer making them strong but light. Deep within resides a ferro-fluid cooled copper voice coil wrapped on a 25.4 mm former. These are surrounded by strong neodymium magnets. The combination of effective suspension and robust motor offers superior damping and allows for ultra-controlled high-speed transients. The rear chambers are acoustically damped to eliminate high frequency distortion and back wave issues pertaining to the underside of the domes.
The Brains Behind The Brawn – The Crossovers
The crossovers have undergone significant changes from anything previous and although they look similar to various other Rainbow units they’re unique to these component sets. Rainbow has undertaken a fair amount of research in order to get the business of frequency swapping just right, with these crossovers providing a far smoother transition between the cones and domes. The slopes are set at 12dB using a combination of high quality capacitor and coil and tweeter attenuation is also built into the circuit. They’re housed in neat polypropylene round cases with the cables emanating from around the perimeter.
The Listening Test
Given the intrinsically new design of these components we were eager to give these a serious run. Starting our auditioning experience with the usual run-in procedure we soon moved to the gentle genres of classic and jazz. From there we then headed into the more demanding genres of dance, rock and ultimately heavy metal. Overall their output is most linear and smooth with the driver pairs blending together beautifully thanks to those expertly tuned crossovers. However during listening its the small idiosyncrasies pertaining to each individual driver that reveals just how successful Rainbow has been in designing these components. The midrange drivers kick harder than ever before whilst delivering a tonal smoothness and accuracy not found in most drivers at this price point. The tweeters are similar; offering detail far beyond anything in this range and while maintaining a strong presence and ambience. They gently fill the car’s interior with controlled and clear highs, rather than forcing it into your ear with all the subtleness of an MMA fighter.
Being right in the middle of the Rainbow stable may mean the Sound Line Pro drivers run the risk of being labelled as just another component set from this master speaker designer. However before you dismiss them, get yourself along to a dealer to have a serious audition of this component set. For we guarantee if you listen intently you’ll hear all the little details you’ve missed hitherto within your favourite tunes.
