Design Ideologies
Sony’s marketing spiel starts with the usual “bring new life to your in-car listening experience with the Sony’s superb ES series” and so on. Blah, blah, blah; we’ve heard this all before. However as a company that tests and reviews speakers aplenty here can we strongly recommend you stop, take a breath and actually take a good look at this new ES range? Because to say they’re incredible would be underselling them. Featuring well-damped yet lightweight rigid cellular aramid fiber matrix diaphragm and well designed rock-solid motor structures; these drivers will give you wider sound stage, more depth to your music, fuller bodied vocals and incredibly detailed instrument textures. Seriously people; at this price point these may be the best speakers Sony has ever produced.
Design Features
When listening to the beautiful tones of Sony’s exquisite ES range you can tell immediate there is some unique and groundbreaking about them. Their clarity, their cleanliness, their power and their superb response. Just everything about the range just reeks with aural superiority. Ergo without further ado let’s have a look at what makes them so special shall we?
Beautiful Fibres
The ES series speakers feature lightweight rigid cellular aramid fibre matrix diaphragm. These diaphragms for the woofer and mid-range drivers are crafted from Sony’s unique lightweight rigid cellular material, formerly known as MRC. The latest generation compound has been further optimised alongside mechanical driver improvements, to deliver an even wider frequency response and smoother more natural sound characteristics.
Separated Notch Edge Surround
The woofer surround features another proprietary technology, with distinctive curved notches improving the vertical amplitude symmetry. For dramatically reduced distortion and enhanced clarity.
Progressive Height Rate Spider
The acoustically-optimised spider allows for higher power handling and airflow, with a profile designed for more rapid and precise cushioning of the speaker cone.
Controlling The Zephyrs
The quintuple beam frame design disperses resonance while the integrated dynamic air diffuser ensures efficient air circulation for smooth cone travel and cooling of the voice coil.
Optimal Formulation
Embedding in a unique matrix with aramid fibers suppresses diaphragm resonance and minimises distortion, not only in the lows, but also in the mid and higher frequencies. The result is sound that is powerful at all frequencies and uncommonly clean, even at high volume.
The Phase Array
The resonance damping phase plugs on the XS-163ES woofer and mid-range driver help realise ideal frequency response, right up to the crossover points. A rigid aluminum bobbin in the woofer and dynamic air diffuser further support the speaker’s wide frequency response, for controlled and dynamic sound delivery.
Hitting Those Highs
Compatible with high-resolution audio, a soft dome tweeter diaphragm is directly attached on the voice coil, designed to cover your music’s ultra-high ends. Returning a frequency range extending up to 40 kHz.
Crossing The Streams
The audiophile-grade crossover features optimised, low-resistance film capacitors for clear high frequency reproduction. Plus inductive winding and air cores coils delivers crisp mid and powerful sound on demand. You will enjoy astonishingly low distortion across all frequencies, and the precision of crossover gain control, even when driving the components with a single amplifier.
