Design Ideologies
When Sundown Audio engineers set out to design the SA V.3 range of component sets and coaxials it knew they had to be something special. For not only was it to be reliable, it also was to uphold the solid reputation of the SA V.3 series subwoofers. That said, it also needed to remain reasonably prices, so that everyone could afford to have a little Sundown Audio goodness in their ride.
What’s In A Set
The SA-6.5SC component set starts out with its custom designed woofer. The woofer features a high quality cast aluminum basket as its starting foundation, whereas many speakers in this category go with cheaper stamped steel frames. The cone is a carefully selected blend of paper and wool fibers designed to damp any unwanted resonances. The dust cap is a soft poly whose size, shape and material were all chosen to create the least amount of breakup and distortion as possible. The surround is a very compliant rubber that helps to tame any remaining edge resonances within the cone. As with all woofers the cone, surround and dust cap profile are critical to the output sound. When designing the SA V.3 range Sundown Audio engineers had no concern for fancy cosmetics and redundant jewelry.
Optimised Motor
The motor was FEA optimized in-house to increase linear excursion and features a full 6 mm one-way linear excursion thanks to a carefully designed motor and extended pole piece. Sundown Audio engineers also thoroughly considered thermal performance in the design with the SA V.3 woofer featuring a vented magnetic gap and a vented voice coil collar. The 60 Watt per side power rating on the SA V.3 woofer is derived from a full 8 hour test on pink noise; at full bandwidth down to 20 Hz. So when crossed over on the bottom-end this figure ends up being very conservative.
The Delectable Top End
The SA V.3 series tweeter had to match the smooth sound of the woofer, so Sundown Audio went with a silk dome. It tested numerous versions, tweaked the gap, tested various dome materials, tested various lenses and various chamber damping materials. This continued until it arriving at the final design. Its superb response graph is proof of the result; one incredibly smooth sounding tweeter. Don’t be fooled by the simple housing, despite the lack of bling this tweeter performs as good if not better than many fancier looking counterparts. Designers stuck with the Sundown Audio mantra of not spending money where it doesn’t increase performance.
Crossing The Streams
The crossover is also relatively simple looking at first glance but it does the job perfectly. It is a 12 dB network centered at 3800 Hz with high quality air core inductors and Mylar capacitors. It also features the ability to change the low-pass on the woofer from 12dB to 6dB or completely bypassed as well. Attenuation wise you can adjust the tweeter between 0 dB, -3 dB and -6 dB levels.
The Overall Performer
Sundown Audio remains confident that anyone who is after a smooth sounding set will be incredibly pleased with the entire SA V.3 range of components. Reinforcing this point of view is the fact that reviews have been overwhelmingly positive on them from all over the globe.
